Cookies.

Postby telepoint » Fri Dec 04, 2009 9:09 am

Many people get very paranoid about what a cookie is and what they think it is doing.

This forum (as do the vaste majority of sites on the internet) uses cookies (kept on your computer) to keep track of such things as when you last logged on, what threads and posts you have read and probably also where you came from and in some cases where you go.

If you have some incredible fear of this "tracking" you can delete all cookies produced by this forum.

When you sign up here and in any other site there is generally an acceptance by you of the way the site works and this generally includes a reference to tracking and cookies.

On this site there are also cookies associated with Google ads, I track visitors via Google analytics and statcounter.

I am quite sure that the web host I use also uses cookies to manage my account with them and the ways I deal / work with them.

The internet would be a bit of a hard and boring slog if not for cookies, but most browsers and spyware / adaware prgrammes allow you to delete regulate cookies.

While not everyone who has concerns about cookies is paraoid, IMO they are they are close to it.

If you have really strong views on privacy I suggest you leave the internet alone.

I would be far more concerned about how credit cards and rewards cards at your local supermarket track you.

browser

tools : internet options : general : clear cookies

This should clear all log in details that you may have and you will need to use them again to log in.

Make sure when you do you clcik the relevant prompts and boxes asking things like "remember me"

Of course if you have a security setting or similar in your browser, anti virus etc that automagically deletes cookies or history as a privacy measure this will not over ride that - you will need to change the settings

Since I didn't change anything it might not be all my fault.

Mail your system to me and it will take 2 minutes to fix, I take no responsibility for lost data or impacts from second story windows.
