Vegieoil on Twitter

I have given into the hype and media about the use of twitter.

I am not sure I understand the validity of it all and even how it might be useful but I will be giving it a go.

Of course I will be using to flog my stuff as well as provide meaningful [...]

Why don’t they get it ? High-speed broadband ‘not necessary for most homes’

Where do we get these experts from? From under some rock?

They may well be correct that using todays applications and understanding 100 megabits is not needed. But what about tomorrow?

Why is the emphasis on entertainment? I am sure that these experts see the internet itself as being unnecessary because they can not seem [...]

The complexities of life?

Kevin Bacon and 6 degrees of separation tries to explain the complexity and closeness of all of us, no matter where we are.

The idea that I can randomly select someone anywhere and hand an item addressed to that person to someone I know and that it is highly likely that just by using people [...]

SPAM – seems to be so much of it.

If there is one thing consistent about a wordpress install it is the amount of spam it seems to attract.

If you are installing wordpress the first plugin you should activate is askimet that is built in or go straight to www.stopforumspam.com and have a look then install the wordpress plugin that uses their database.

Spam Blocker installation

Automated and manual spam is amazing stuff.

No sooner then this site was setup in they came. Luckily phpBB and WordPress have a number of plugins and the vaste majority of this spam automagically disappears into the ether.

Any spam that does get through can be completely removed by the push of a button along with [...]

Spam hasn’t improved :-(

Spammers come out of the woodwork, they sniff out these installs and proceed to be a pain in the bum.

www.stopforumspam.com

Works for me and it has not let one through yet, of course when theyever get through one button removes their existence completely.

The majority of spammers emails never even get to first base [...]

This blog is opensource software, my shop is opensource software, I am playing with opensource auction software, I ran an adserver using opensource software and the bulletin board is opensource.

Incredible stuff but a lot of generous people – thanks

The boat has moved on

The successful completion of the cron job.

The integration of the elusive statcounter.

The wandering through the untagged posts.

Enough for today.

www.telepoint.biz for heat exchangers and filter bags

Working through broken links

Slowly working through some of the posts to correct obvious broken links and other minor details.

Please let me know if you find any errors when you are looking – thanks

Are we back and running

The move to a new host brought some unexpected problems.

WordPress (or me) could not get going to completely bring back the previous posts / users / data or whatever.

We are now basically starting again, if at all possible I will get stuff back but the assumption should be is that what you currently [...]

and it all continues……..

Finally back and running correctly.

It never actually went away but a lot of effort went into restoring functionality and all the data and details.

Wading around in mysql, phpadmin, plesk, import and export of tables, timeouts and poor responses.

Makes me wonder?

Is the saga over……………

Continuing saga of the phpBB forum.

After more mucking around I decided to go back and look at the original database that a couple of days ago would not open, could not be viewed and caused timeouts.

It is now working correctly – or appears to be be.

Pointed the original phpBB config files back [...]

IT at its best

Amazing stuff all this technology.

Amazing how a small image known as an avatar can cause so much time and stress

Recent backups of phpBB have caused a small problem, avatars cannot be uploaded to a user account (rather they can be uploaded but the apache server takes control of the file permissions and [...]

Are we all annonymous on the internet?

Social networking sites,

Auction and selling sites

Private web sites

Our details are spread all over the internet, do a quick search for just about anything eg telepoint heat exchangers and hits spring up all over the place. There will even be stuff that does not even seem to be related to the search terms [...]

The process of duplication and exposure

I have started repeating myself.

With 2 locations where I can ramble and complain I have found that it is quite easy to write an opinion at Telepoint and then copy it here.

This does not always happen of course for various reasons.

Exposure is God?

I am not sure of that either.

Geoff

Automated forum signups

Aren’t they great.

We have this incredible technology that drives the internet and the world of communications but we still have some who have no intent to ever contribute automagically signing up to forums in some sort of attempt to spam others at some point in the future.

What a world we live in?

So – when does title and responsibilty change when selling goods??

By agreeing to my terms a buyer is accepting risk and if they decide not to insure delivery the loss is theirs subject to the provisions of Auspost if that is their choice of shipper.

Here is a great piece of reading
